I have been blessed with many things in this life. One thing I was not blessed with was the ability to eat an orange without getting juice all over my face and hands. One thing I was recently blessed with was access to someone's greenhouse-grown citrus, including some very delicious Mandarin oranges (Citrus unshiu). There are also some grapefruits (pictured below) and a few varieties of lemon and lime. I worked about a month at a greenhouse in Jackson that is growing strawberries, and the owner has few citrus trees in giant pots of peat moss.

This, along with my indoor garden, spurred many imaginative thoughts about growing crops out of their natural ranges and out of season. Then I saw coffee plants at Home Depot for $2.99. You know what I did. I bought that sucker, put it in the grow tent, and pumped it full of nutrients.

Will I be able to make it fruit and get my own homegrown coffee beans? A quick Google search revealed many skeptical answers to would-be indoor coffee growers asking the same question. I am unperturbed. This planter was made to be a desktop trinket, but when I am done with them they will be far too big for that. There is a place in Santa Barbara that is growing coffee outdoors, I found out. It's the only place growing coffee in the lower 48 that I could find. Now there are two places: Santa Barbara and my garage in Jackson, Tennessee.
